Common Terms
— Do not capitalize generic terms, including seasons (fall 2019, spring session, big top, spring show, summer show)
— If it’s not a proper name, it should not be capitalized
— Capitalize the names of classes (Multiple Trapeze, Spanish Web), but do not capitalize the names of equipment (multiple trapeze, tumble track)
— If an equipment name includes a proper name (Cyr wheel) or typically capitalized word (Spanish web), follow standard capitalization practices
Departments and Committees
— Do not capitalize the names of CJ departments or committees (executive department, gala committee)
Program Names
— Do not capitalize program names (scholarship program, work-study leadership program), unless a program has been given a proper name (Medicare would be an example. As of February 2020, CJ does not have programs with proper names.)
Publications
— In article titles, use upper and lower case style, capping all words with 4 or more letters, e.g., “Competitive Shopping With Friends”
— Capitalize publications (Family Newsletter, 2020 Spring Session Guide), but do not capitalize form names (payment plan form)
— Capitalize web page names (Spring Show page, Family Portal)
Titles
— Capitalize a job title that comes immediately before a person’s name or is used as part of their name when addressing them
— In this case, the job title is usually replacing their first name (Executive Director Butler)
— If the job title comes after a person’s name, or is used instead of a person’s name, then it is generally not capitalized (Dan Butler, executive director; or the executive director)
— Exception: When using a title in direct address, capitalize (“Are you sure, Executive Director?”)
— Exception: In signature lines (or other formal contexts), titles may be capitalized (“Sincerely, Dan Butler, Executive Director”)
