SPRING SHOW PERFORMER EXPECTATIONS

Circus Juventas has over 750 students perform in our Spring Shows every year. The event requires an incredible amount of organization, and we rely on parent and student cooperation to make sure everything runs smoothly. Read on to learn more about what it means to be involved in the Spring Shows.

Equipment Etiquette
In order to maintain a safe and orderly backstage area, we ask that all students abide by the following:

  • All unicycles must be hung up in the designated area. Backstage volunteers have the right to confiscate unicycles ridden in the Big Top once the pre-show meeting starts.
  • No juggling backstage.
  • All safety belts must be returned to the stage manager or tunnel volunteer after the act in which it was worn.
  • Rosin socks and athletic tape will be tied to the electrical closet door handle. Please use only what you need!

Performer / Parent Responsibilities
Both parents and performers should be prepared for what quickly becomes a marathon performance run. Keep the following in mind:

  • Arrive on schedule for your makeup time! Pre-Show Meetings start at 6:00 for evening performances or 12:00 for matinees. All performers are expected to make it to the pre-show meetings with the exception of the Toddlers/Kinders.
  • Remember that the volunteers are volunteers and are here to help with the show, so please remember to say please and thank you to them. This show cannot happen without them.
  • Your costume is your responsibility. Please hang it up on the hanger with the correct label (your name and act are on the label) and place it on the rack in the correct spot, with your shoes/fishnets in the accessory bag.
  • Eat your meals outside of the Circus Juventas building; you may bring an appropriate non-messy snack if needed so long as you clean up when finished. Bring a water bottle with your name on it!
  • Bring quiet activities that are appropriate for the low level of backstage lighting. Leave valuable items at home.
  • Performers and parents should make pick-up arrangements before the show.
  • Cell phones must be silenced during the shows!
  • No friends, siblings, or parents without volunteer badges are allowed backstage.
When can students bring costumes home?

Students performing in the purple show must leave their costumes in the building until the final performance. All other performers must leave their costumes in the building until pick up the Tuesday after the final performance. This may seem a little inconvenient but it prevents a performer from accidentally taking someone else’s costume home and leaving the costume owner with another show and no costume. It also allows our staff time to organize everything for pick up. All costumes will be in the lobby until the end of May, when they are then moved into storage.

Where do performers’ costumes get stored during the performances?

All costumes are stored in the girls and boys locker rooms with the exception of the Toddler and Circus Kinder costumes: these students come to tech/dress and all performances already dressed and are responsible for keeping track of their costume(s) at home.

Who takes care of fixing students’ costume if something goes wrong during the shows?

We have parent volunteers working backstage to assist with last minute and unexpected repairs.

Can fishnets be used from previous performances or years?

Previously used fishnets must be approved for use by the artistic department. Students who are approved will be responsible for bringing their fishnets to the first dress rehearsal. Contact us for more information: adminstaff@circusjuventas.org.

Who purchases the fishnets?

Circus Juventas will order all fishnets as well as pair them with the appropriate costume when they arrive.

Why do some students need to purchase fishnets while others do not?

Select acts require fishnets, usually based on the design of the costume (i.e.: costumes that require bare legs, etc.).

What kind of shoes do students need to purchase for the show?

Shoe needs are determined late February and should be purchased well before show time. Circus Juventas creates a shoe flier which lists each act and their shoe needs. We partner with local St. Paul business Grand Jete for all shoe needs.

What is a cover up?

A cover up is an over-sized, black t-shirt performers wear over costumes. This cover up should be worn at all times except when performing, during which time it should be stored in the performer’s bag. The tag should be labeled with the performer’s first initial and last name.

Who is responsible for Toddler and Circus Kinder costumes?

Toddlers and Circus Kinders are given their costumes to take home the last week of spring session classes. Parents are responsible for the costumes for the entire run of performances.

Who takes care of altering performers’ costumes (if needed)?

We have parent volunteers who work with us to make sure costumes get altered as needed.

When do performers get measured for costumes?

Students get measured for costumes during the first week of winter session classes (during class time).

Where and when are students picked up after they’re done performing?

Performers will need a ticket to join friends or family in the seating units. (They should change out of costumes before leaving the backstage area.) Parents should pick up students who are 10 and younger from the backstage curtain by their respective locker rooms (boys at the north curtain and girls at the south curtain). First-half performers whose parents are volunteering are allowed to wait backstage for the remainder of the show and cannot join their parent in his/her/their volunteer duties/area. Performers with acts in the second half are expected to stay for the final bow. Again, students 10 and younger should be picked up by a parent at the north or south curtains.

How are students selected to stay and clean after a performance?

We require all performers ages 10 and older in the second half of the show to help clean the arena following performances. This schedule is made available by late April.

What food is appropriate to pack?

Ideally, students should plan to eat before arriving at Circus Juventas. No fast food, or greasy or messy food, is allowed in the arena or backstage. Healthy, non-messy snacks and a water bottle (labeled with the performer’s name) are encouraged. Each performer that eats backstage is responsible for cleaning up after themselves. Students should not bring food items containing peanuts as some of our students have severe allergies to peanut products. Performers will ONLY be allowed to visit concessions prior to and immediately following intermission.

What should students have with them backstage?

We recommend performers bring a bag backstage (preferably one that zips or ties shut). This bag should be used to store healthy snacks, a water bottle, street clothes/cover ups, blankets, and quiet activities (books, cards, etc). Everything should be labeled with the performer’s first initial and last name.

Do students need to wear makeup?

All performers with the exception of Toddlers, Circus Kinders, and boys (unless they are performing in clowning) are expected to wear makeup. Students are assigned a makeup time and are expected to arrive to the big top shortly beforehand in order to have their makeup applied by senior students.

What is the pre-show meeting?

The pre-show meeting is a time for the team to come together, hear announcements, receive “smile and style” awards, and generally touch base about anything performance-related. These meetings are very important and happen before every tech/dress rehearsal and performance. Toddlers and Circus Kinders do not attend this meeting, but all other performers do.

When should youth performers arrive for performances?

Arrival times for performers vary depending on when they are called for makeup application. This scheduled is released in late February as part of the Spring Show Parent Packet.

How do parents know when performers are done with their act?

We run a blog or update Twitter during the spring show that is updated in real time to alert parents about which groups are about to perform, are performing, or have just finished performing.

Do parents need to buy tickets to see their child(ren) perform?

Yes. All patrons, including parents and guardians, must purchase tickets to see the show.

How should the performers wear their hair?

Long hair should be pulled up and out of the face. No specific style is necessary.

When should spring show performers arrive for tech/dress?

Performers should arrive for tech/dress at 4 p.m.

How do students know if they have an extra practice?

The extra practice schedule is included in the Spring Show Parent Packet, which is released late February.

What are extra practices?

Extra practices are time outside of class put aside for combined acts to work together in the center arena in preparation for the shows. Attendance at these practices is incredibly important. School administration should be notified if a students cannot attend assigned practices. Contact us: adminstaff@circusjuventas.org.

What if students have a conflict with one or more performances?

If a student is unable to perform one of the two weekends, the School Administrator should be notified at least a month before show teams are assigned (by the end of December). We try to work around these conflicts. Once teams are assigned, if conflicts arise, the School Administrator should be notified ASAP so a substitute can be found for the student (where necessary). Contact us: adminstaff@circusjuventas.org.

When do students find out which show team they are assigned to?

Show team assignments are finalized by the end of February (typically just before the spring show parent meeting).

What does yellow, blue, and purple teams mean?

SPRING SHOW performers are divided into three show teams (referred to as yellow, blue, and purple). This ensures we do not have 700 students performing in one show. Each show team is assigned three performance dates in which they perform.
